Adult Program

Zen Martial Arts

Blends the most practical & effective elements of several arts, practicing at all ranges. We recommend adults start here.

About the ZMA curriculum

“Why did you call it Zen Martial Arts?” I asked Sifu long ago.
“Because ‘mixed martial arts’ was taken by cage fighters. We meditate.”

We combine elements of Karate, Kung Fu, Aikido, BJJ, and other arts into a distilled program that guides you to learning the most effective parts of Sifu Brown’s 50 years of practice. Want to learn great self-defense? That’s first: Do what you must to get home safely, not win a tournament. Then we add the layers that one day allow you to take someone under control without hurting them.

What’s the best defense? “Don’t be there!” We start with an assumption of non-aggression, that if there is a fight you didn’t start it and want to get away. Early combinations you learn all begin with defensive techniques that condition your body to instinctively move you out of harms’ way and respond well.

About ZMA

Zen Martial Arts combines close range (locks, chokes, & throws), long range (blocks, punches, & kicks), and light grappling (on the ground). We work with partners, not opponents, to improve ourselves as we help each other. Our art prioritizes self-defense & personal safety rather than adhering to “tournament rules.” We’re here to learn great martial arts, not score points.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I get hurt practicing Zen Martial Arts?

No. When we see someone with an injury in the dojo, while we genuinely empathize, it’s also a bit of in-joke that we know 95% of them came from day-to-day life, not the dojo. No one should guarantee zero injuries in the course of a lifetime of practice, but this dojo may be the safest in the world. We’ll take care of you — we want you to come back!

Is this a good workout routine?

Yes! Many students start their practice as a more engaging substitute to the gym. Regular attendance will absolutely improve your cardio. If you aren’t sweating yet, simply do the technique harder.

Will I be so exhausted I’ll regret it tomorrow?

We strongly encourage you to push yourself and surpass your limitations. We also recognize we have families & careers we need to show up for tomorrow. Do what you can today, no more and no less.

How fast will I get “good”?

For everyone in every art, the uncomfortable answer is “slowly.” It’s important to commit to your first six months of practice and have the patience & perseverance to see it through. The months & years know things that the days & weeks never will.

Am I too young / old to practice Zen Martial Arts?

No. If you’re under 17, Wushu may be more appropriate. If you’re retirement age… so what? Martial arts is a lifelong practice and the best time to start was yesterday. Gray hair isn’t just welcome on the mats, it’s normal.

What’s the locker room situation?

We have simple men’s and women’s changing rooms. We don’t have showers, just single-occupancy bathrooms. We have deeply respectful students — there’s no “locker room banter”. If you need an accommodation, just talk to us!
